Michael Baumgarten served in the Army for 11 years as an Army Ranger and attended WSP at the University of California, Irvine in 2021. After leaving the Army in 2013, Michael attended junior college. He finished his bachelor’s degree in anthropology at California State University Northridge in 2021. Shortly after receiving his bachelor’s degree, Michael applied to graduate school at Arizona State University, where he recently earned his master’s degree in anthropology.

Michael seeks to define the anthropology of military service and military and veteran culture. He has a long-term goal of contributing to military and veterans’ studies and creating new transition systems informed by research into evolved human behaviors. Michael is now pursuing a doctoral degree in evolutionary anthropology from Arizona State University.
