James Hunter Muth served five years in the United States Navy as an Airman aboard the USS Makin Island, where he supported aircraft fueling, launch, and recovery operations. During his service, he took on several additional leadership roles, including serving on the Medical Training Team, coordinating events through Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), and acting as Treasurer of the Junior Enlisted Association. His dedication and performance earned him recognition as Sailor of the Year for Fiscal Year 2022–2023.

As he prepared for the transition to college, Hunter attended Warrior-Scholar Project’s academic boot camp at Wesleyan University in 2025. After separating from the Navy, he enrolled at San Diego Mesa College, where he is building a strong foundation in STEM coursework with plans to transfer into a bioengineering or related field. He is active in the MESA STEM program, helping revitalize the campus Student Veteran Organization, and interns at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where he works alongside an electrical engineer and gains hands-on technical experience.

Hunter is passionate about combining engineering, science, and service to improve people’s lives. When he is not studying or working, he enjoys surfing, practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and spending time reading at the beach.
