Student Spotlight 2023: Christina McDowell, U.S. Navy
Tell us about yourself.
I am from Cincinnati, Ohio, and I served in the United States Navy. I decided to join the military because I wanted to serve my country. A fun fact about myself is that I enjoy glassworking.
Why did you decide to participate in WSP this summer, and was there a shift in your confidence level from the first day of the course to the last day?
Before attending the all-women humanities and business course at Notre Dame this summer, I had already received my bachelor’s degree. I initially applied for WSP to support my husband because I am so proud of him and his endeavors, which include returning to school this fall. However, I had the unexpected gift of learning about programs that will engage my talents and interests, and I have since applied for benefits to further my education in an effort to re-enter the workforce.
On the first day of the course, I felt excited for the opportunity and was very aware that I would get out what I put in. While there, I was definitely provided the opportunities and support to succeed. After my experience at Notre Dame, I feel beyond prepared to succeed in anything I pursue. This was an amazing experience that I will take with me and have referenced already.
What were some key insights you gained during your course, and what is your biggest takeaway?
The insights I gained include the confidence to succeed in my educational endeavors, understanding the opportunities available as a veteran, and the community of WSP alumni. The most important thing for me was how the personal experiences of the fellows and the experiences I had with them have directly impacted the educational course I am currently pursuing.
How would you describe your overall experience?
