Student Spotlight: Giovanna Lopez, Navy
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Giovanna Lopez, and I’m a Boricua from Orlando, FL. I served in the Navy as a sonar technician. I joined the military to secure a better future for myself, primarily to ensure my education would be paid for, but also to make my family proud, especially my little sisters and niece. I wanted to be a role model for them and to show them that with determination, there’s always a way forward.
I love doing my makeup and getting dressed up. It’s my creative outlet AND a confidence boost all in one. I also play the trumpet and enjoy working on non-profit startups, fundraising, graphic design projects, and grant writing—especially when it’s to help organizations or politicians for the greater purpose of my community as a whole.
Did you have any college experience before attending your Warrior-Scholar Project boot camp? Why did you decide to apply?
Before attending the best boot camp, Yale Business, I completed multiple certifications, including grant writing, digital marketing, e-commerce, and project management. My education is so important to me that when I didn’t have the opportunity to take college courses during my Navy contract, I used my free time to build on some skills and continue learning.
I applied to Warrior-Scholar Project (WSP) to build a strong academic foundation before transferring to a rigorous university and to utilize the resources and programs at my disposal. Additionally, I hoped to connect with like-minded veterans who would help me stay focused and inspired—let’s just say that WSP DELIVERED.
What were you feeling going into the first day of your boot camp? Did you experience a shift in your confidence as the week progressed?
I was excited and deeply motivated. I knew WSP had the potential to elevate my journey, and I was eager to see how the program would strengthen my path toward making a meaningful impact in my academic endeavors.
I absolutely experienced a shift in my confidence. Connecting with veterans and active-duty service members from across the country was one of the most inspiring parts of the experience. Hearing their stories and sharing space with people from different branches and backgrounds reminded me just how powerful our community is and how we’re all pushing forward with purpose and resilience.
Throughout the week, my confidence only grew as I was exposed to professionals in academia, business, and the corporate world. It expanded my perspective and network while strengthening my ability to identify and access meaningful career opportunities. I felt seen, heard, and valued in this space, so I left the program more prepared, focused, and fully energized to take the next step in my academic and professional journey.
What are some of the key takeaways from your boot camp experience? Is there one thing that stood out to you?
Everyone struggles with impostor syndrome regardless of our background, but we belong and can do it. Also, during my WSP experience, I realized that the discipline I developed in the military can be redirected toward my education and personal goals. This mindset shift is powerful!
The most important thing I learned was that I’m not alone. Instead, I am part of a community that genuinely cares, supports, and wants to see me succeed. That’s invaluable and what truly helped me in the ways I needed, especially as a transitioning service member.
How would you describe your overall experience?
It was even more impactful than I imagined. I walked in hoping for tools and knowledge, and I walked out with those plus an added sense of purpose, deepened confidence, clarity, and an amazing community.
Do you have any parting words?
Yes! I’m so proud to share that I’ll be completing my AA at Valencia College next month AND heading to Dartmouth this fall to finish my bachelor’s degree. The journey continues, and I am so grateful for the WSP experience.
