Student Spotlight: Jacomo Cherry, U.S. Navy WSP-University of Pennsylvania Cohort
What was your educational experience prior to WSP? Would you consider yourself a confident student?
High school diploma and one year of vocational education. I was confident in my ability to complete the tasks at hand, however, not in my ability to understand university-level academics as a whole before WSP.
Had you participated in any sort of virtual learning before?
Yes, I was in school from the start of the pandemic until December 2020, learning music production.
Why were you excited to participate in WSP this summer?
I was a bit hesitant due to my inherent skepticism of higher education in the current political climate.
What have you learned so far that you think will be helpful as you pursue your degree?
I have learned to be confident in my beliefs and to state them regardless of what I may fear those in positions of authority may think of them. The professors that I encountered were extremely thoughtful and passionate about their students and genuinely enjoyed being challenged in their academic environments.
What was your favorite session, and why?
The discussions about the state of the military, and the lessons on Our Declaration, De Tocqueville, and the Federalist Papers. They are all related and have an interesting history together. It ties together with the military state of affairs and its contradiction to our founding documents.
Are there any instructors or fellows who have made a difference for you at WSP?
Professor Deborah Harrold was my favorite instructor. She is a very genuine person that is not afraid to be labeled in speaking up for what she believes in.
Is WSP having any effect on how confident you feel as a student?
WSP has given me great confidence in my ability as a student, and I look forward to using what I have learned in the fall.
