About the Veteran’s College Success Kit

This course is designed to help you not just survive college, but thrive. Its content is grounded in contemporary research on student veteran transition and academic success in higher education. And each module has been shaped by the input and experience of thousands of warrior-scholars who have successfully transitioned to college and beyond.

The best part is that you can complete it at your own pace on your own time as you transition from service. Within the five topic areas, you’ll learn critical information, processes, and tools while engaging in a mix of direct instruction, lively classroom discussion, and tailored reading and activities.

We believe that every veteran has the potential to excel in higher education and beyond.

The Warrior-Scholar Mindset

In this module, we explore the Mindset Continuum—an approach that acknowledges the fluid nature of learning—and introduce the Warrior-Scholar Mindset, which centers on self-awareness, purpose, knowledge-seeking, and resilience, and highlight how these essential traits, already honed through military service, provide a foundation for success in the college environment.

Identity & Community

In this module, we examine how identity shifts, the differences in military and academic cultures, and the vital role new communities play in fostering success and mental health. Crucially, we redefine “imposter syndrome” as “imposter phenomenon,” offering strategies to leverage self-doubt into motivation and growth.

Method to Optimize Attention & Time

In this module, we explore why equating productivity with self-worth is dangerous, discuss the concept of “pseudo-working,” and introduce Newport’s Law (focus intensity x time). Finally, you will learn how to build your personal MOAT (Methods to Optimize Attention and Time), using practical tools for setting priorities and eliminating distractions.

Writing, Note-Taking, Reading, and Discussing

In this module, we focus on the fundamental academic skills necessary for college success—note-taking, analytical reading, class participation, exam preparation, and essay writing—stressing the interconnectedness of these building blocks. You’ll also learn strategic methods for transforming simple tasks into tools for deeper understanding.

College Knowledge for Student Veterans

In this module, we help students become informed consumers of higher education by defining their personal “why,” determining what to study, and navigating financing options like the GI Bill. We also dive into the “hidden curriculum”—the unspoken rules of success, focusing on building essential relationships with professors and leveraging vital campus resources.
